HOW YOU CAN USE ESPORTS TO CHANGE INSTRUCTION IN YOUR CLASSROOM
First off: What is esports?
Esports is a form of competition that is facilitated through computer gaming. Beyond the competition, esports has become an increasingly popular form of entertainment that engages hundreds of millions of people around the world and is rapidly growing into a “soon-to-be billion-dollar industry.”
And you want me to teach it in my class?
Correction, YOU will want to teach it in your classroom! In an effort to capitalize on interest-based learning, we wanted to capture students where they are--with esports. And you can customize the lessons to be a small pilot or a larger unit of study.
We sought explicit connections with esports and content standards (Next Generation Science Standards, English—Language Arts, International Society for Technology in Education, and Social Emotional Learning) and wrote a series of integrated courses for grades 9-12 that would replace traditional high school English. This matters because it could literally change the game of how we integrate STEM education with workforce sectors and industries in order to attract more students.
