Phil Roh is an English teacher at Samueli Academy in Santa Ana, California. This is his first year at Samueli and part of the draw was the school's commitment to project-based learning. At Northwood High School, his previous teaching assignment, Phil helped co-found the award-winning Forensics Core Program, a transdisciplinary learning experience that sets out to investigate criminal behavior through scientific, psychological, and philosophical lenses. In that spirit, Phil is always looking for ways to innovate curriculum for the good of all students. He is the proud father of Ezekiel and Lucille (for Halloween this year, Ezekiel chose to be a Stormtrooper and Lucille chose to be Ariel).

Why did you become a NASEF Scholastic Fellow?

I chose to become a NASEF Scholastic Fellow because of my skepticism. I am not a gamer, so I do not reside in the land of eSports, but I am a teacher, and I will do everything in my power to meet students where they are. Besides, it's a lot more fun there, anyways.
